Question About Our Products?
Here's more information about how our products are made. Can't find your answer here? Feel free to get in touch!
At Fat Fox Mushrooms, we want you to have the best growing experience possible. All of our ready-to-grow mushrooms kits are covered by our Harvest Guarantee, which means that we guarantee at least one flush of mushrooms. We offer expert mushroom-growing advice, so are here to help if you run into any challenges. Simply get in touch via email or WhatsApp with some photos of your kit as soon as you experience any issues and we'll be happy to check things for you and get it back on track. We strongly encourage you to get in touch with us as soon as you notice that things aren't going as they should so that we can help. Please note that we will need to take a look at up to date photos of your kit and cannot help if you have already disposed of it. If your kit still fails to produce mushrooms after following the instructions and our recommendations, let us know and we’ll replace it!
Our Harvest Guarantee only applies to Ready-To-Grow Kits. We're still more than happy to help you troubleshoot, but any kits or products that require you to inoculate or are grown outdoors we cannot guarantee will fruit due to the many factors that are outside of our control.
This depends on the species, but it can take anywhere from 1 week to 4 weeks to start pinning (beginning of formation of fruiting bodies aka. baby mushrooms) and another 1-2 weeks before the mushrooms are ready to harvest. The exception is reishi which takes several months to a year to grow and reach maturity.
Rate of growth is also affected by the environment, particularly temperature and humidity, with growth slowing down in the colder months.
We generally advise that our kits are started within 2 weeks of arrival for best results. However, we understand that sometimes life gets in the way! If you’d like to delay starting your kit, you can keep it somewhere cool, dark and away from sources of heat or refrigerate it for up to 1 month.
IMPORTANT!: Pink oyster and Golden Oyster cannot be stored in the fridge as they are tropical species and cannot withstand temperatures below 10°C.
While some mushroom companies use blood fish and bone meal as a source of nitrogen, we do not use any animal products in our mushroom growing kits. We use only vegan-friendly natural substrates such as sawdust, straw & grain.

We guarantee at least one harvest from our ready-to-grow kits, but if you’re willing to wait it’s likely that you will see additional flushes. Different species will produce different total quantities of mushrooms. We have listed the maximum expected yield on each of our growing kit product pages.
Our mushrooms are grown on a variety of (peat-free!) natural and organic substrates, each meticulously tailored to suit different species and provide best growing results. Nearly all of our growing mediums are derived from by-products of other industries, constituting approximately 94% of our total materials. Our kits also include UK grown organic wheat or rye grain.
This includes PEFC certified hardwood briquettes, produced in adherence to HACCP food safety standards and made from sawdust sourced from a single-site sawmill. Additionally, we incorporate straw stems from British grain harvests and organic wheat bran into our substrate mixes. PEFC, which stands for "Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification," is a globally recognised non-profit organisation dedicated to enhancing transparency in the wood-based product industry. By opting for PEFC-certified materials, consumers can rest assured they are supporting sustainably managed forests.
While our kits aren't organic certified, we've diligently sought out the highest quality, sustainably sourced and organic substrates. We hope to gain organic certification for our products soon - watch this space!
Yes! Our cardboard boxes are FSC certifed, made from recycled materials and produced by Kite Packaging, a certified carbon neutral supplier. We also use gummed tapes which are biodegradable. The only thing that is not recyclable is the specialist plastic filter bag. Unfortunately, there currently is no suitable alternative for these filter bags, however we reuse these bags as much as possible. For this reason, we encourage you to send us back your undamaged filter bags (carefully cut open alongside the top edge to remove the substrate) so we can use them again.

Once you've taken out the mushroom fruiting block from the bag, you've got a couple of options. You can either bury it outside, where it might get some extra energy and sprout more mushrooms, or toss it into your compost to break down further. When it comes to the packaging, you can recycle or compost the cardboard and paper. As for the filter bag, if it's still in good shape, you can send it back to us to be reused, otherwise it can be disposed of in your general waste.
