This kit contains:

- 40 wooden dowels inoculated with UK-native reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) mycelium

- 25g of wax to seal the log once the dowels have been inserted

- detailed instructions for use

*Please Note: This kit includes dowels colonised with your chosen mushroom species. However, you'll need to source a fresh-cut hardwood log (no older than 6 weeks). If you don't have a local tree surgeon, we recommend Hanging Wood. Their sustainably harvested logs come from copparded trees from their managed woodlands in the North Downs, where trees are cut at the stem, leaving the root to regrow new stems every 5–10 years.

Dryad's Saddle information:

Dryad's Saddle (Cerioporus squamosus) is the largest capped mushrooms in the UK, with caps sometimes reaching a diameter of over 60cm in the wild. As well as being impressive to look at, it is also a delicious edible that is prized by foragers, however it is difficult to catch it at the right time as they are only considered edible when young and tender. With our at-home grow kit, this becomes a lot easier!

The common name Dryad's Saddle has its roots in Greek mythology. Dryads are forest nymphs or tree spirits and these large mushrooms would make a perfect place for them to sit and rest. Their other common name pheasant's back mushrooms refers to the brown, feather-like scales on their caps which resemble the markings on a pheasant's feathers.

Cooking Tips: Dryad's Saddle has a distinctive smell that is strikingly similar to fresh watermelon rinds and when cooked have a meaty taste and texture not disimilar to pork, but with nutty, earthy flavour notes. Young caps can be sliced and sauteed with herbs and spices, or marinated before grilling as with teriyaki.  Goes well with meat and fish or in Asian-style soup dishes.
