Start your very own mushroom patch in your garden or allotment! This is a UK-native poplar fieldcap culture obtained from a wild fruiting body found at Hengistbury Head, Dorset. Poplar fieldcap mushrooms, also known in Italy as pioppino, are thought to be one of the first mushrooms cultivated in Europe. They boast velvety tan caps and an earthy, nutty flavour that’s slightly sweet with some peppery notes. They are delicious in soups, stir-fries, risottos and pasta dishes, and their intense flavour goes well with game and red meat.
This kit includes paper instructions and contains one 1.9kg bag of sawdust spawn, which is suitable for an area of no more than 3x3ft for best results. If you’d like to order more than two outdoor sawdust spawn kits to establish a large edible mushroom bed or multiple beds, please email us - we can offer discounted rates with reduced packaging.
To create a mushroom bed, break up the spawn and bury it in the ground or a large planter with extra substrate such as straw, hardwood chips, sawdust, or cardboard for higher yields. For a quicker but smaller harvest, the block can also be buried whole without added substrate.
Depending on when it’s planted, mushrooms may appear within 2–6 months. Spawn can be planted year-round, though spring is best. Expect 1–3 seasonal crops of poplar fieldcap mushrooms.
