Blood Reishi Info

Blood Reishi is our nickname for Amauroderma rugosum (syn. Sanguinoderma rugosum), a striking polypore fungus native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and the Pacific, including China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines. It typically grows in humid forests, where it thrives on rotting wood or forest litter. This species is culturally and medicinally significant to many Indigenous communities across its native range.

In the wild, its fruiting body emerges from the forest floor as a thin black stipe (stem) rising from the leaf litter, topped with a fan-shaped, woody black cap and a white pore surface underneath. Much like fungi in the Ganoderma genus, Blood Reishi takes many months for the fruiting bodies to mature.

One of the most fascinating features of Blood Reishi is the way the white pores or mycelium bruise a vivid red when disturbed. If you cut and squeeze the fruiting body, it will "bleed" out vivid red liquid that can be used as a natural ink (it dries black) and we've had fun using it to draw directly on paper.

We’d love to hear how you’re using it too! If you’ve experimented with Blood Reishi as a dye or in your art, share your creations and ideas with us at fatfoxmushrooms@gmail.com. Photos welcome!
