Looking for something to grow through the winter in your garden or allotment? Start your very own mushroom patch! This is a UK-native Wood Blewit (Collybia nuda, formerly Lepista nuda) obtained from a wild fruiting body found at, and generously shared with us by RHS Garden Whisley.
Blewits, known for their beautiful purple colour, thrive as temperatures drop. They have a mild, nutty, and slightly sweet taste with earthy and floral notes.
This kit includes paper instructions and contains one 1.9kg bag of sawdust spawn, which is suitable for an area of no more than 1 square meter for best results (bed depth should be around 6 inches). If you’d like to order more than two outdoor sawdust spawn kits to establish a large edible mushroom bed or multiple beds, please email us - we can offer discounted rates with reduced packaging.
To create a mushroom bed, break up the spawn and bury it in the ground or a raised bed with extra substrate composed of garden waste, mulched leaves, composted straw, hardwood chips and sawdust.
Spawn can be planted year-round depending on when it’s planted, and mushrooms may appear within 2–9 months. Blewits like the cold and will begin to appear when the temperature is consistently below 17 degrees and will survive frost. They are most likely to fruit October through March.

Preferred temperature for fruiting: 0-10°C. Only fruits when temperatures are constantly below a maximum of 17°C. In the wild, they are commonly found growing in the winter months.
